Vintage Cube Season is Off to a Typical Start

Last night I drafted the Vintage Cube.

It used to be called “Holiday Cube” and last year we all got free Phantom Points to play one Cube! This was great because then if you went 2-1 you got enough points to play another. And so on. All for free!

Well they didn’t do that this year, so I bought some tickets and used 10 to do a draft.

I built this deck.

At the time I thought it was kind of bad for a Vintage Cube deck, but it was the best I felt I could make from what I was passed and I’d have given it a 4/10 or 5/10. It also contained one of my favourite Cube cards (Opposition), and a few token makers to work with it.

Round 1 I won 2-1 in 10 minutes, both wins exactly according to plan – early ramp, early Natural Order for Progenitus (except one time he was in my hand so I had to grab Avenger instead), counter back up, win. The game I lost, the opponent Mox’d out an early Xenagos and I was stuck on land so I just scooped.

I was pretty tired and it was late so I moved the laptop to my bed and managed to stay awake for the 30 minutes or so I had to wait for the next round.

Round 2 I won 2-0 in 5 minutes. Game 1 I played turn three Natural Order for Progenitus, opponent scooped. Game 2 I played mana elves plus Gaea’s Cradle for an early Nevinyrral’s Disk, then Deranged Hermit, next turn tap for lots of mana, board wipe then cast Avenger of Zendikar, then I had enough mana to Green Sun Zenith for Progenitus and opponent scooped again.

So now it was 5 minutes into round 2 and I had to wait who knows how long for round 3 (the finals!). I was sleepy!

The next thing I knew, I was waking up and my laptop said I had 100 player points. I’d fallen asleep while waiting for the next round and auto-forfeited the finals by inactivity.

Mistbind Clique + Quickling Lock

It’s not quite a huge secret that I like to play Faeries in Modern. I brew with them, I collect them, I play them, I love ’em!

Let’s talk today about a cool (soft) lock that the deck has with Mistbind Clique and Quickling.

It is a lock because it taps all your opponent’s lands! It is soft because they can respond with instants, for example killing combo pieces at the right time. If the game has gone long though then you usually have a cheap counter or two (Dispel, Spellstutter Sprite, etc.) and it’s probably fine!

MistbindandQuickling.png

There are two main versions: 2 Quickling 1 Mistbind, and 2 Mistbind 1 Quickling.

2 Quickling 1 Mistbind (6 mana)

Play Quickling and – in response to the bounce trigger – play Mistbind, championing Quickling.

The Quickling trigger resolves but since the Quickling is exiled under Mistbind now, you don’t have to do anything and your Quickling will still be OK under your Mistbind.

You now have a Mistbind championing a Quickling.

Next (opponent’s) turn play quickling, bouncing Mistbind. The first Quickling is released. Use its bounce trigger to bounce the Quickling you just played. Replay Mistbind, championing the released Quickling. You’re back where you began the turn (plus summoning sickness on the Mistbind), and all the opponent’s lands are tapped!

2 Mistbind 1 Quickling variant (4 mana)

As in the first case, play Quickling then Mistbind to get a Mistbind with a Quickling championed under it.

Next (opponent’s) turn play Mistbind, championing the other Mistbind. The Quickling is released. Use its trigger to bounce the Mistbind you just played. The first Mistbind is released. Champion the Quickling and you’re back where you began (again, with summoning sickness on the Mistbind but all your opponent’s lands tapped).

And that’s the Mistbind Clique Quickling Lock!
